Press Freedom Violated: WJWC Denounces Arrest of Journalist Hazza

Women Journalists Without Chains (WJWC) expresses its grave concern over the arbitrary arrest of Yemeni journalist Hamoud Hazza, who was forcibly taken by security forces affiliated with the Fourth Security Zone in Ma’rib Governorate and transferred to an undisclosed location.
On Saturday, August 16, 2025, a security force accompanied by female police officers raided Hazza’s residence, detained him without legal grounds, and searched his home, confiscating personal belongings. This act represents a serious violation of fundamental rights, including freedom of opinion and expression, and an assault on press freedom as guaranteed by the Yemeni constitution and international human rights law, particularly the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR).
WJWC strongly condemns this unlawful arrest and holds the security authorities in Ma’rib fully responsible for the safety and well-being of journalist Hamoud Hazza. The organization demands his immediate and unconditional release and calls for an immediate halt to the ongoing pattern of harassment and intimidation against journalists and media professionals in Yemen.
WJWC also urges local, regional, and international organizations concerned with press freedom and human rights to denounce these violations and to pressure the authorities in Ma’rib to secure Hazza’s release, as well as that of all other arbitrarily detained journalists, political activists, and human rights defenders.
The targeting of independent voices not only undermines Yemen’s democratic aspirations but also erodes the principles of justice, accountability, and the free exchange of ideas that are essential to building peace and stability. WJWC reaffirms its steadfast commitment to defending press freedom and protecting journalists from arbitrary detention, enforced disappearance, and all forms of repression.
